about

Below are some notes from Cloudland Blue : A Diary (crispycat-recordings.blogspot.com) regarding the creation of these pieces.

6 September 2022: Finally, the rains did indeed come and, boy, did they come. A massive thunder and lightning storm ensued. I, of course, recorded it for future use...

8 September 2022: This morning, another rainstorm which, like yesterday's (or was it the day before's?) was recorded for future use...

12 September 2022: An earlier rise today and the first part of the day working on ideas for the next CBQ album, due 7 October. I have a plan to use some synthesiser tracks recorded back in 1989, along with the recent recordings of the rain storms here. Nothing actually produced but progress with the treatment of the synth pieces was made. I will return...

14 September 2022: I'd been having trouble for a while with my delay unit, so looked up the manual online and found how to sort it. This, in turn, spurred me onto firing up the old Yamaha CS5 again. I recorded four tracks - two trials and two intended tracks - using the 4 second delay directly to the recorder, creating new WAVs that I could work with. Then I packed up the gear and worked out a modus operandi for the creation of the final tracks thus abandoning the previous idea I spent hours on the other morning re the synth pieces from 1989. After 3 episodes of "The Man Who Fell To Earth", I returned to the machines for more work. Just before Anne arrived home, I'd created a new two track LP, incorporating the storm recordings from earlier this month. But, as I listened back, I began to doubt the second track. More work tomorrow I think. A fruitful day...

15 September 2022: Up early, with a view to remixing the second part of "Gewitter", after having had doubts that it was perhaps, slightly too intense. However, I worked instead on the two initial experiments I recorded when I first set the equipment up and, soon, I had actually created "Gewitter III" and "Gewitter IV" and it all holds together nicely as a four piece work - two calm pieces with two not so calm pieces between them...

19 September 2022: Up just before seven. I went against the grain and worked this morning - completing the final mixes of the four main tracks of "Gewitter", out October 7th...

about

Cloudland Blue Quartet Edinburgh, UK

A quartet in name only, initially influenced by Fripp & Eno's "No Pussyfooting" and The Velvet Underground's debut, songwriter & soundscaper David Reilly started musicking in 1977 by creating drones using sellotape on the keys of his dad's Bontempi Organ. The subsequent junk shop purchases of an electric guitar & fuzzbox and the acquisition of an old Beatles songbook, led him into songwriting... ... more
