SPLINTERHEART (24,25/4/10) He sees her walking through the garden He sees the sunlight on her hair He knows she’s hurt her heart has hardened It’ll take some time for her to care But he needs her now like he’s never needed anyone before And he can’t see how he’ll ever find the key that unlocks the door He knows she’s hurt her heart has hardened It’ll take some time for her to care His friends all say that he should stop and let it go They say it’s pointless and she’ll never ever know But he can’t stop this thing that’s capturing his heart If he could talk to her then that would be a start She’s like a flower in the winter That needs the sun to let it grow So now his heart begins to splinter He doesn’t think she’ll ever know And he needs her now like he’s never needed anyone before But he can’t see how he’ll ever find the key that unlocks the door So now his heart begins to splinter He doesn’t think she’ll ever know
2.
THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE pt 1 (19,26/6/10) I never knew how much I meant to you It seems that I was the apple of your eye And now after all these years I know But it’s too late For me For you
3.
THE KILLERS AT THE COUNTER (27/4/10) The door opens and two men walk in, they sit at the counter “What will you have?” the busboy asks, “What will you have this evening?” Outside it’s getting dark, the streetlight lights up The killers at the counter read the menu And the clock strikes eight and it’s getting late and the day has flown “Give me the gun; every time you drink you want to kill someone” He’s down on his knees, he’s begging them please “Every time we get drunk we want to kill someone, give me the gun” He’s down on his knees, he’s begging them please And the clock strikes eight and it’s getting late and the day has flown
4.
HERE THEY COME WITH THE NEW MACHINES (6/6/10) I don’t know but I’ve been told that the streets are paved with gold On the other side of town and they’ll never let you down When they say what they will do they will always carry it through They will never let you down I can’t say if that’s the way for you to reach the highest goal But if it’s better than before then that’s surely worth the time You can do what you want to do set your sights and carry it through You can live by your own mind I don’t know what you’ve been sold but I don’t believe it’s true When they say the things they do and they make you feel so bad On the other side of town they will never let you down You can do what you want to do People say today’s the day when it all comes true for you But I don’t if know that’s quite right I didn’t sleep a wink last night It was all going through my mind you’re so very, very kind Now I don’t know what we should do Here they come with the new machines the ones that make the dreams The dreams come true for you greatest thing under the sun And they say it’s all for you but I don’t know what to do I don’t know if we should go Perhaps I’m wrong faith needs no proof and the absurdity of youth Will always win out in the end and with every hour you spend With the boys and girls of old I don’t know what we’ve been told But this doesn’t seem like gold I don’t know but I’ve been told we might die before we’re old But I’ve never felt so young and I feel like spring has sprung And an eternity of truth has only just begun And the songs are being sung
5.
THE ETERNAL OPTIMIST (24/5/10) Cross my heart and hope to die, see the birds up in the sky Watch the stars come out at night, everything will be all right
6.
KREBS WENT TO WAR (18,23/4/10) Krebs went to war from the college door, he lay flat, he shivered and he prayed “Dear Jesus please, please get me out, keep me from death and I’ll do anything you say I believe in you, I believe in you” and in the morning the sun came up And the day was hot and the day was quiet, and he lived Krebs went to war from the college door; he never told anyone he loved Christ Now here’s a picture of his graduation, here’s another of humiliation From ugly girls along the Rhine, back to small town Oklahoma Years beyond the war being over, back he came but it was much too late He didn’t want to talk about it; people didn’t want to hear about it He lied to please, came to him with ease, the more he lied, the more he’d freeze Took on the roles of others, till the memories were set in stone Chains and guns in the forest, deep down he knew everything was wrong Krebs went to war from the college door, he never told anyone he loved Christ Late summer days spent sleeping late, bored in the bookstore, bored with the town Nothing had changed as he looked around he walked up Main Street and he walked back down He liked to watch, didn’t like to talk, his family loved him; he drove dad’s car Krebs went to war from the college door; he never told anyone he loved Christ There was nothing he could change; his experience was out of range He was no hero inside his head; inside his head he was already dead He read his books, he read the papers, still liked his sisters but broke his mother’s heart “I don’t believe in you, I don’t believe in you”, and in the morning the sun came up And the day was hot and the day was quiet, and he lived He abandoned Jesus, he abandoned God, still prayed with his mother and she kept him safe Krebs went to war from the college door - he lost everything
7.
THE FOUNDLING (29/5/10) You asked me once, you asked me twice, you asked me far too many times Where was it you had come here from? I couldn’t break the truth to you; it would have been too hard to take I knew your little heart would break, if you had ever known the truth You weren’t from here, your weren’t from me, I found you one day in the cold I took you in, made you my own But I still loved you like the son I knew that I could never have I knew your little heart would break, if you had ever known the truth You ask me once; you ask me twice, you ask me far too many times Where is it you have come here from?
8.
THE CAGE OF EXPECTATION (29/5/10) The cage of expectation will rule your very soul Your mind will not be open you’ll never let it go You have to leave your hat and your coat outside the door Come in and sit upon the ground and let your feelings go The night will soon be over and you’ll realise the truth You closed your mind so long ago, just beyond your youth
9.
I WALK TO THE BEAT OF A COLD BROKEN HEART (1/10/09) The boy fell from a very great height Saw his mother with her hand to her mouth There was nothing I could do, I stood frozen, I stood still We’re coming down to earth with a song and a dance A song and a dance and a bang There was nothing I could do, I stood frozen, I stood still Nothing I could do so I pulled myself together Didn’t look, I merely walked on And I walk to the beat of a cold broken heart And the river runs over the stone It’s the end of the line Down towards the bank I could feel the hot city Summer sun beating down on my head There was nothing I could do, I was thirsty, I was warm Went to the shade and I ordered a drink And I sat at a favourite old table There was nothing I could do, I was thirsty, I was warm
10.
BLACK EARTH AND THE CITY FALLS (28/3/10) She said “No-one will ever find us here” We walked down to the end of the pier I called on God to fear She took the wheel she steered And we move through the darkness And we move through the light Black earth and the city falls And we’ll hide in the mountains And we’ll hide in the desert And we’ll hide in the city And we’ll hide at the coast And they will not know we are here, no, no, no And the sun’s rays burn the paper down And the flames take the books down When I tire of staring at the stars, I close my eyes and I lay down
11.
THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE pt 2 (19/6/10) I never knew how much I meant to you It seems that I was the apple of your eye And now after all these years I know But it’s too late For me For you
12.
Never or Now 03:21
NEVER OR NOW (4,5/9/09) I had time to kill But time is precious so I put my watch away I was thinking about my lifetime I fell asleep And I slipped into a dream The one with flowers on the table I fell upon the floor I awoke and saw you watching Across the table Never or now is what you said We should be living but we’re almost dead And now you know life’s too short for waiting Well you took me home and we drifted off to sleep I had no thoughts about tomorrow Now you’ve gone away and they say it’s for the best But I can’t think about tomorrow I was walking alone then I felt you by my side I am never alone you’re always with me I feel you now so close oh yes but it’s all wrong I never knew how life could be

about

Cloudland Blue Quartet Edinburgh, UK

A quartet in name only, initially influenced by Fripp & Eno's "No Pussyfooting" and The Velvet Underground's debut, songwriter & soundscaper David Reilly started musicking in 1977 by creating drones using sellotape on the keys of his dad's Bontempi Organ. The subsequent junk shop purchases of an electric guitar & fuzzbox and the acquisition of an old Beatles songbook, led him into songwriting... ... more
