The concept for "Departure" was indeed a "departure" from the norm, in that it was initiated with a request to Brussels based saxophonist, Joe Higham to produce unaccompanied solos, providing, alongside each, a note of the relevant BPM and the key.

From there, I built electronic soundscapes around the solos.

A trio (Saxophone, Piano & Double Bass), a quartet (Saxophone, Guitar, Piano & Rhythm Bed) and a quintet (Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Double Bass & Rhythm Bed) were created for "Circular" (with bassist Tim Webb's historical solo recordings being utilised in the first and third of those); a long, 5 part piece was worked up for the title track; and, finally, a shorter, stand-alone piece was put around Joe's third solo.

Somewhere in the background of the title track, I was also able to utilise some work by previous collaborator Edward Spark, created for our joint early 2023 collaboration with Blue Sun Chasing.

While this was a very challenging but enjoyable exercise indeed and while I look forward to producing further work utilising this method, with Joe, Tim and/or other collaborators, I feel the solo versions of the three pieces quite easily form a stand alone Cloudland Blue Quartet work, making it more than worthwhile for any CBQ fan to opt for the download version of "Departure" to gain access to those, as part of the download exclusive 6 track, 82 minute bonus bundle.
